Youth in Afforestation cry over 8 months of unpaid allowances
The Youth in Afforestation beneficiaries are crying out to the government to settle their allowances that have been in arrears for about eight months now.
On 1st August 2022, they carried out an industrial action to demand their allowances from the government and despite several meetings with those at the helm of affairs, little has been done to address their situation.
Madam Ernestina Nyarko, the group’s General Secretary said this situation has pushed most of its members into untold hardship.
“From January till now, we have not been paid. It is really sad and very difficult for all of us. I can say on record that, they walk long distances to get to work. People are also being ejected from their houses because they can’t pay rent,” she lamented.
The government birthed this program in 2018 in a bid to protect the vegetation and promote reforestation.
Currently, 100,000 beneficiaries have been enrolled to work under the program.
Meanwhile, Forestry Commission has called for calm among the beneficiaries as it is preparing to settle their areas.
