Abandoned E-Block

The Ministry of Education has dismissed reports by members of the Minority Caucus of the Education Committee in Parliament that E-blocks commenced under the erstwhile Mahama administration in 2013 as part of efforts to expand infrastructure in implementing the progressively free Senior High School policy have been abandoned.

Although the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education Kwasi Kwarteng commended the idea behind the project, he was quick to point out that some of the projects were fraught with funding and contractual issues making the contractors have problems in continuing them.

He then blamed the Mahama administration for constructing schools in faraway places where the targeted students would have problems accessing with some of them needing a boarding house to be attached to it for students to access.

The Minority Caucus on Education on the other hand touted their records on education and accused the Education Minister of peddling falsehood that the projects are being done.

Member of the committee Dr Clement Apaak on a tour of one of the sites complained that work have been abandoned and contractors have not been on site for years.

He said this is utter shame and the minister also said work is being done.

Ranking Member of the Education Committee Peter Nortsu Kotoe also added that they will do what it takes to get the government to complete the projects.

A total of 200 of these model secondary schools were promised to be ready at the end of Mr Mahama’s four-year presidency between 2012 and 2016.

However, not all the E-blocks were ready as of 2016 when he lost that year’s elections to president Akufo-Addo.
