We’ve not announced any transport fare increment – GPRTU
The public has been advised by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union to treat with contempt news making rounds that transport fares would be upwardly adjusted on Wednesday, 21st September 2022.
This is in response to some transport unions revealing their intention to increase transport fares by 30% from midweek next week.
The GPRTU points out that negotiation needs to be held with the government and other factors need to be considered before such increment is affected.
Currently, plans are underway to engage the Ministry of Transport regarding the intention, Mr Godfred Abulbire General Secretary of GPRTU has revealed.
“Our position is that fuel prices have gone up, which must be equated to fare increment. But that is not the only component we consider when adjusting prices.”
“A committee has been set up to do the fact-finding for the report to be submitted to the Minister so we agree. But settling on a particular margin and timeline now will be creating fear and panic”, he said.
As an association, GPRTU noted it has taken notice of the reduction in sales due to the high transport fares.
When transport fares were increased by 20% in May petrol and diesel were going for GH¢9.41 and GH¢11.12, respectively but currently price of petrol per litre has now moved to GH¢11 while diesel is now over GH¢14 per litre at most pumps.
