Western Regional Minister wages war on illegal mining
The Western Regional Coordinating Council in collaboration the regional security division have seized 16 excavators.
These excavators were seized during their surprise raid at locations were the illegal mining or galamsey practice is said to be ongoing.
In the raid dubbed “operation clean water bodies,” five illegal miners have been arrested so far and the Western Regional Minister Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah indicated his resolve to arrest, prosecute and flush out these illegal mining practices.
Also Municipal Chief executive for Wassa Amenfi East George Egyiri hopes this illegal mining menace will be a thing of the past and revealed that the arrested illegal miners have been sent to the Sekondi-Takoradi Police command.
It will be recalled that quite recently a National Consultative forum was held on how to curb this illegal mining practice and preserve our natural habitats. However, it appears that some recalcitrant ones do not see it that way hence the regional minister clamping down and waging war on them to also preserve the region’s water bodies.
