The Minority and Majority caucus on the communication committee in Ghana’s legislature are yet to come to a common ground regarding the SIM cards registration following a threat by the Minority this time round not to approve the needed budgetary allocation for the Communication and Digitization Ministry if the myriad of issues raised regarding the exercise are not addressed.

Their threat is stemming from the initial rollout of punitive measures by the National Communication Authority on individuals who have not registered their SIM cards.

As preparations for the 30th September deadline, people who are yet to register their SIM cards would be facing some punitive measures starting from Monday, 5th September 2022.

This has been met with complaints over the fact that some have genuinely not registered their SIM cards due to issues with their Ghana Cards.

Mr Sam Nartey George, a Deputy Ranking Member of the communications committee in  Parliament pointed out that it is about time the issues surrounding the acquisition of the Ghana card are tackled.

He cited how they did hear the Communications and Digitisation Minister out till she submitted her report and hinted at going on another tangent if he fails to address the concern regarding the sim card registration.

“Let me serve notice that we will move everything within our means to ensure that the Ministry of Communications doesn’t get its budgetary approval for its agencies,” he warned.

Meanwhile, those who have genuine concerns on why they are yet to register their SIM cards have been advised  by the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications to petition the Communication and Digitization Minister for their concerns to be looked into.
