Dr Eric Oduro Osae, the Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency, has stated that it is necessary to probe the source of wealth of those whose income does not appear to fit their lifestyle.

He pointed out that most people are recognized and even given places in churches because of their money, but the source of the materials is never questioned.

Dr Osae, who made this in an interview with TV3 on Monday, May 9, 2020, indicated that it is quite possible that certain people gain a fortune through corruption, necessitating more investigation into their sources of income.

He said, “Some people’s lifestyle do not match their income and we don’t question their source of wealth”.

Commenting on the issue of corruption, Dr Eric Oduro Osae, argued that the practice should be made a high-risk venture in order to minimize the menaces.

He reiterated “We have to make a corruption high-risk area.”

Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, stated during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, July 22, 2021, that he will not be able to stop corruption in Ghana.

Instead, he promised, he would make the practice a high-risk activity to discourage individuals from participating.

“There is no way I can stop corruption, God himself will not acclaim to that. I am going to make corruption costly, a high-risk activity.

“I will institute what I call pressure for progress. There will be a systemic review of public agencies.”

He informed the Committee that unexplained wealth exists when people are unable to explain the source of their money in comparison to the legal income they generate.

With many public officers diverting and looting state funds, Ghana’s corruption cases appear to be increasing such that in 2021, the country scored 43 points out of 100 on the 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index reported by Transparency International.

The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks countries and territories based on how corrupt their public sector is perceived to be. A country or territory’s score indicates the perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).
