We may have to move from house to house to vaccinate people against Covid-19 – Dr Kumah Aboagye
The fight against coronavirus is far from over but the battle against the disease has drawn the attention of the authorities to another battle which is the issue of vaccine hesitancy due to the perception some people have formed against it.
Director-General of the Ghana Health Service Dr Patrick Kumah Aboagye explained that the situation is so because there is no evidence of more cases as in the first where people actually rushed for vaccines but that situation has brought another issue to tackle which is the vaccine hesitancy.
On how they intend to tackle the issue, he indicated that they have adopted multiple approaches where people have been encouraged to go to the hospital as well as moving from house to house and schools in some districts to get people inoculated.
With regards to the issue that happed in a Krobo district over vaccines where it was purported on social media that, they are refusing to get inoculated because they think the jab will change their mind to vote for the New Patriotic Party, Dr Kuma Aboagye said it was a bit exaggerated on social media as some people are getting inoculated in that same district.
For the schools especially the GHS has targeted 15-year-old’s that is why they have collaborated with the Ghana Education Service and the authorities in these schools who also in turn through Parent and Teacher Association meetings informed the parents of those old enough to receive the jab about the exercise that is going on for their teenagers to get inoculated to curb the spread.
Dr Kumah Aboagye also believes it is because of such situations of hesitancy that is why during a briefing with the press some target groups such as, health workers, drivers, school children and their authorities mandatorily have to be inoculated and it will get to a time those vaccination certificates will be inspected and without that, you cannot go about your daily activity just like in other countries.
Though people are complaining, he believes what has been done had to be done to ensure the rules are enforced to help Ghana attain herd immunity.
