WAEC releases 2021 WASSCE results, entire results of 174 candidates cancelled
Following the release of the 2021 West African Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE results, West Africa Examination Council, WAEC the body responsible for the exam has revealed that 174 students have had their entire results cancelled.
This was contained in a statement by WAEC which gave a summary of the results released.
WAEC explained that their results were cancelled due to “various examination malpractices such as bringing foreign materials including mobile phones into the examination hall, tearing off parts of question papers and collusion.”
In total, results of 3,667 candidates were also withheld as probes into issues of collusion during and after the said exams were being ascertained. In such instances depending on the outcome of the investigations, the results may be released or probably cancelled.
According to WAEC’s statement, subjects such as Integrated Science and Social Studies recorded improvements in the performance of candidates from Grade A1 to C6 in 2021 as against 2020. The two subjects recorded 65.7% and 66.03% respectively this year as against 52.53% and 64.31% in the previous year.
English Language and Core Mathematics also saw a decline in the performance of the candidates from Grades A1 to C6 in 2021 as compared to 2020. Those two other core subjects recorded 54.08% and 54.11% respectively this year as against 57.34% and 65.71% last year.
The reported numbers of cancelled papers and those withheld may in the long run vindicate the Africa Education Watch report that revealed that there were leakages in 55%of the WASSCE papers and that occurred between 10 hours and 1 hour to the start of the papers.
The council in response to the Africa Education Watch report admitted that questions for Elective Mathematics paper 2 and Section A of English language Paper 2 were circulated on social media platforms.
