UTAG Strike: Parliament’s education committee to meet Education Minister
Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe, the education Ranking Member, have revealed that plans are far advanced to meet with Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, over UTAG’s ongoing strike.
The strike which has gone into its fourth week is impacting academic work with the potential of leading to the closure of public universities. There has not been any consensus between the University teachers and the government.
It will be recalled that since tertiary institutions opened for fresh students in 2022, lecturers have been on strike.
The situation has forced the National Labour Commission (NLC) to proceed to court after tagging the lecturers’ action as illegal.
However, UTAG has called the bluff of the commission indicating they are ready for a showdown in court come Thursday.
Meanwhile, reacting to the development on 3FM’s Hot Edition on Monday, January 31, 2022, the Ranking Member on the Education’s Committee stated that he together with the Chair will meet the Education Minister on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, for a briefing on the matter.
“The Chairman of the committee and myself discussed this matter at length yesterday and we want to engage the minister tomorrow”.
It is uncertain if the meeting will lead to a resolution of the matter since the Education Minister has also indicated his readiness to resolve the impasse to allow the lecturers to return to the classroom.
