US Embassy in Ghana cautions citizens over #MarchForJustice demo

The US mission in Ghana has warned its citizens in the country to move with caution over possible outcomes of the March for Justice demonstrations today.

In a bid to raise its concerns about growing cases of injustice in the country, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is staging the street protest to highlight what it says are ceaseless brutalities against civilians by security agencies.

“The protest is to demand justice for all persons killed and brutalised by state-sponsored thuggery and or adventurism by police and military forces,” the NDC has clarified in a statement.

However, in a press statement on its website, the US Embassy in Ghana has advised its citizens to be wary of the large crowd and disruption of traffic that the demonstration is likely to occasion.

“Considerable Police presence and heavy congestion are expected along the planned route, beginning from Accra Mall at 6 am and then moving south towards Parliament House throughout the day.

“Actions to take:

·                Monitor local media for updates.

·                Exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.

·                Plan for alternate travel routes.

·                Comply with all Police and security service instructions.

·                Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security, travel, and health updates.”

Police in Accra has also urged protestors to observe COVID-19 safety protocols while participating in the street protest.

In a press statement, the Police urged motorists to use alternatives routes that may be suggested to them as the protests march proceeds.
