The Christmas tree scandal that has engulfed the Ghana Airports Company Limited and its Board Chairman has certainly caught the attention of the Minority group in Parliament and they are ready to file an urgent question to the Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah on the process involved in purchasing the Christmas tree and its inspiration at the Kotoka International Airport.

Mr. Governs Kwame Agbodza, Ranking Member of the Road and Transport Committee suspects something fishy which leaves a lot of questions begging to be answered regarding the procurement of the decorated pieces.

Though the Board Chairman for the Ghana Airports Company Limited has sort to clarify issues regarding the purchase of the Christmas tree citing that it was GHS34,000 but the Adaklu lawmaker is not convinced as he believes the procurement should be probed.

“First, Boards are not supposed to be doing the day-to-day administration of a public entity. So I am surprised that the Board Chair is responding to the concerns. It’s a management function, not a Board function. The cost is something we can always investigate. The whole thing is becoming something that is unusual, so we need to look into it.”

“It is currently a matter of public concern but unfortunately, Parliament is on recess but when we come back, surely we will bring the [Transport Minister] to come and respond to the very breaches that have been alleged to have taken place at the Ghana Airports Company”, he said.

When the news on such a purchase broke, Mr. Adom Otchere debunked allegations that the company bought four Christmas trees at GH¢84,000 during the yuletide.

He also stated that staff were paid their December salaries and bonuses but the claims were denied by the staff of the Airports Company Limited who further revealed that their December salaries were paid in January.
