Those questioning my anti-corruption credibility are loose talkers – Akufo-Addo replies Gyimah-Boadi, others

President Akufo-Addo has, through his Secretary, Nana Asante Bediatuo, said that Prof. Gyimah-Boadi’s assertion that his (President Akufo-Addo) credibility on anti-corruption is in tatters and that the forced retirement of Auditor General Daniel Yaw Domelevo puts the nail in the coffin of his credibility is a loose and thoughtless statement for a distinguished civil society member to say.

In an open 21-page letter addressing the concerns of Civil Society Organizations(CSOs) on the forced retirement of Auditor General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, the President debunked conclusions by the CSOs that Mr Domelevo was hounded out because of his anti-corruption drive, especially his issuance of surcharges and disallowances, stressing that the President retired him lawfully after having worked closely with him in his fight against corruption.

The letter then singled out Prof Gyimah-Boadi for criticism following his recent pronouncements on President Akufo-Addo’s credibility on anti-corruption, insisting that the President’s credibility on anti-corruption is “unmatched” and that peerlessness cannot be changed by misconceived opinions.

“It is, thus, very disappointing to hear a very senior and otherwise distinguished member of civil society make such loose and thoughtless statements like the President’s credibility on anti-corruption is in “tatters” and “has been in tatters for a while,” and that the compulsory retirement of Mr. Domelevo puts the nail in the coffin of the President’s credibility. Such statements are not based on facts and driven likely by emotions. The fact is that the President’s credibility on anti-corruption is unmatched and no amount of misconceived opinions can change that,” the letter read in part

In a recent interview with Citi TV, Prof Gyimah-Boadi, a much respected anti-corruption CSO leader, argued that the forced retirement of Mr Domelevo was a final nail in the credibility coffin of the President with respect to anti-corruption.

“I think the worse of it is that, we have a presidency that is increasingly looking like it has difficulty working with institutions and leadership that it has not appointed. Then, the Domelevo incident, or debacle is for me a clear example of that,” Prof Gyimah-Boadi said in a television interview which aired on Citi TV, Wednesday night [March 10, 2021].

“As for the President’s [Akufo-Addo] credibility in terms of anti-corruption, I’m afraid to say it is in tatters. It has been in tatters for a while but this puts a nail in the coffin,” Prof Gyimah-Boadi who is also founder and former Executive Director of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), added.

Mr Domelevo was recently asked by the President to proceed on retirement after he had been forced to go on a 167-day accumulated leave.
