They are rather partisan – Joe Wise replies critics
First Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s legislature who also doubles as Member of Parliament for the Bekwai Constituency Joseph Osei Owusu has rubbished claims that he is biased.
According to him, he is rather fair and firm each time he gets an opportunity to lead proceedings in the legislative house. The accusation was sparked by his recent ruling on the Minority’s request to reverse the approval of the budget.
His ruling got most members of the Minority caucus infuriated which led to some chaotic scenes on Wednesday, December 1 2021.
This led to him suspending proceedings for about an hour due to the dramatic scenes after he declined the Minority’s request to have the approval of the budget reversed.
Members of the Minority caucus were infuriated about the First Deputy Speaker’s ruling and vowed not to work jointly with him any time he gets the opportunity to preside over proceedings in the house.
The First Deputy Speaker on the other hand rejected the allegations of bias levelled against him by the Minority.
He defended his stance by saying, he tries as much as possible to be fair in managing the house anytime he is presiding.
Mr Joe Osei-Owusu accused those making claims that he’s been partisan as those being partisan in their actions.
“The persons claiming I was partisan are in fact being partisan of their evaluation of my ruling or my conduct of the House.”
“But I can tell you and I think I have demonstrated over the years that I am overly cautious and I try as much as possible to be fair in managing the House anytime I am managing the House.”
