The action of the 80 MPs from the Majority side has largely saved the country from possible military intervention, veteran politician Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has said.

Astute statesman and politician, Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has stated that he was not surprised at the turn of events in Ghana’s legislature on 25th October 2022 where 80 legislators from the Majority side demanded the sacking of Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta.

Explaining why he was not taken aback by the situation, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe stated on TV3 on 26th October 2022 that “it did not come to me as a surprise because I know this was long overdue and our democracy could be on course and the 80 Members of Parliament by now should know they have.’’

Reflecting on the call of the 80 legislators, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe insisted that “I would not congratulate them but I know that history will absorb them for making this call”.

The founding Member of the New Patriotic Party also believes that “this will change the face of democracy not only in NPP but in other political parties as well not denying the fact that those Members of Parliament who made this call saved the 4th republic as we were getting close to Military intervention”.

Touching on what his friend for years President Akufo-Addo will do about the demands of the 80 legislators, Dr Tamakloe stated that “the Akufo-Addo I know will make several attempts to change their minds and if they agree they will be the most hated people”.

Reiterating his stance, he added that “Akufo-Addo knows Ofori-Atta is not performing well but would prefer him to be there that is why I insist that if the MPs want our respect and that of their constituents they should stand firm in this their demand”.

On whether he feels vindicated by his statement concerning the leadership voters were to expect from President Akufo-Addo, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe stated that “I have known President Akufo-Addo for years and I believed him winning the elections and with age, he would mature but what made me take a different stance was he supervising the sacking of some national executives of the New Patriotic Party in the persons of Paul Afoko, Kwabena Agyapong and Sammy Crabbe I was shocked”.

He added that “to me, the final straw that broke the camel’s back was the false explanation given for their sacking that was when I decided that this was the end”.

“I was condemned by Otiko Djaba who I also introduced into politics for my stance but I guess she has learnt her lesson now.”
