Senior Staff associations of Universities of Ghana threaten strike in a feud with public universities
There is tension brewing between members of the Senior Staff Association of Universities in Ghana(SSA-UoG) and some public universities regarding educational certificates.
The frustrated members expressed their displeasure at the seeming refusal of some public universities to recognize First-degree third-class certificates that were acquired through sandwich and distance learning programs awarded by accredited Universities in Ghana for promotion.
SSA-UoG further complained about some universities refusal to also accept two year Masters of Business Administration (MBA), Masters of Science (MSC) and Masters of Arts (MA) in the related disciplines for promotions.
Other concerns the association enumerated that affects them include “refusal and failure to promote, upgrade or appoint Senior Staff who have acquired new certificates base on rank and positions, undesirable creation of artificial conflicts between the scheme and conditions of service of Public Universities in Ghana and established statutes of Public Universities in Ghana”.
The association also expressed concerns about the “discrepancies in the payment of some entitled allowances among Senior Staff”.
It also expressed the strongest belief that the actions which are not alien to the scheme of service of Public Universities could highly affect the development of its members, describing the actions as “injurious and highly detrimental to the academic progression of its members”.
In concluding its statement, the association called on stakeholders such as the Education, and Employment and Labour Relations Ministries as well as the Ghana Tertiary Education Council to intervene expeditiously to avoid the options of full-blown industrial strike action.
