Rains rip off homes of 150 people in Jirapa, NADMO steps up sensitization
As the rains set in, management of the National Disaster Management Organization NADMO has revealed that they are collaborating with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to de-silt the choked drains.
Mr George Ayisi, communication director for NADMO said officers of the organization have embarked on a sensitization exercise in flood-prone areas where they have been deployed.
“In flood-prone areas the sensitization is ongoing. It’s important that NADMO partners with the Assemblies to do some delisting and dredging and we will ensure it goes on. “
The recent downpours affected some parts of the country. In Accra, some parts of the Central Business District, Sahara, and Odawna, among other areas were all not spared the perennial floods.
Homes of over 150 people were ripped off after a 30-minute rain in the Ullo community of the Jirapa Municipality of the Upper West Region and displaced more than half of the community.
Also, the Ghana Meteorological Agency has called on citizens not to disregard weather warnings issued by the agency to protect lives and properties.
The agency explained that they have upgraded their systems to ensure that they release real-time weather updates as and when necessary. The latest caution from the agency comes on the back of recent rainstorms which have caused havoc.
Mr Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, Deputy Director in charge of forecasting at the Ghana Meteorological Agency has advised the various assemblies to begin desilting choked drains which normally contribute to flooding in most parts of the country.
