Workers of the Ghana Railway Company have sent an SOS to the government to urgently save the company from collapsing.

The Ghana Railway Workers Union in a statement endorsed by its General Secretary Godwill Ntiahmoah decried the current plight of the company. It said the company is unable to carry out its simple mandates such as buying fuel to cater for the fuel trains and their manganese freight.

“The company currently cannot purchase fuel to run its manganese freight as well as the Diesel Multiple Unit, a passenger train. As a result, for the past few days all freight trains as well as the DMU’s have been parked,” part of the statement read.

Apart from the fuel situation, another alarming issue the union drew the government’s attention to is its ballooning debt starting from salaries through to defaulting SSNIT contributions for staff as well as credit union contributions.

“Aside of the inability to purchase fuel, is the overwhelming debt burden of the company including the non-payment of salaries to some staff from August and the general staff from September as well as workers dues, SSNIT, Credit Union contributions,” the statement added.

The union is calling on President Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency use proceeds realized from the auctioning of the scrap metals to turn around the fortunes of the company so they do not lose their livelihoods.
