Professor Kwame Karikari Lauds The Establishment Of Office For The Safety Of Journalists

Communication expert Professor Kwame Karikari has lauded the initiative of the Information Minister to set up a complaints unit for journalists who have issues bordering them in the course of their duty.

Prof Karikari is of the view that setting up such an office for media practitioners is within principles and a laudable idea, he also charged owners of media houses to follow up on the establishment of such an office to be responsible for the safety of their reporters as well.

He appealed to the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah to use his good office to collaborate with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) to urge the police to bring finality and justice to the death of Ahmed Suale who was murdered in the cause of duty .

Also, he advised that with the newly set up complaints unit office for journalists, a committee should be set up to deal with threats on journalist lives as well since we have witnessed some notable journalists such as Manasseh Azure Awuni and others .

Office for the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of journalists

The government of Ghana on the 4th of May 2021 commissioned an office for the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of journalists. The ceremony was led by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on the day the world commemorated World Press Freedom Day on Tuesday May 4th 2021. The office will be operated by the National Media Commission to cater for and validate alleged attacks on journalists.
