Dr Franklin Asiedu Bekoe, Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has disclosed that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will soon address the nation again on the measures outlined to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last time Mr Akufo-Addo addressed the nation on the pandemic was in March 2021. Since then the virus has taken new twists with a sudden upsurge in cases coupled with the detection of the deadly Delta variant in the country. Health experts have been advocating the imposition of restriction in order to contain the virus and possibly avoid the third wave.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has resolved to increase testing as part of a raft of measures to fight a possible third wave.

The Service will also introduce antigen testing as part of rapid response in locations where there are outbreaks, such as schools, workplaces, and at points of entry.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, July 21, 2021, the GHS also noted that the 3rd wave in Ghana is real and evidence from other countries that have experienced the 3rd wave indicates that the cases are usually twice or thrice the first wave.

As part of the measures put in place to reduce the surge in cases, the GHS has planned to put in place contextual risk communication messages for locations such as schools, workplaces and also establish and enforce adherence to Covid-19 safety protocols where appropriate.

Further, the GHS plans to strengthen contact tracing, quarantine, and isolation. It said Ghana is increasing its capacity to handle different brands of vaccines including those that require ultracold facilities.

The measures were adopted at the High-Level strategic meeting on Covid-19, the press release explained.
