Parts of Kasoa old market demolished to create access roads
A team of Police and a task force from the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly bulldozed portions of the Kasoa Old Market. This is to allow access in the event of a market fire.
Despite problems in dismantling areas of the market, according to Isaac Ofori, Municipal Engineer for the assembly, the exercise will not be in vain because it is aimed at protecting lives and property.
Isaac Ofori according to Citi News revealed that some parts of the Kasoa New Market had also been designated for demolition
“We will move to the Kasoa New Market after this exercise because a similar thing is happening there, and if care is not taken, it can bring calamity in the event of a fire”.
According to Mr Ofori, they have “made a number of announcements to raise awareness about the demolition, but they [market women] have chosen not to move. So we decided to use force to get them to move so we could build an access road in the improbable case of a fire.”
“Two years ago there was a fire outbreak in this market and fire officers had difficulties going to douse the fire. There have been similar incidents across the country where property running into millions of cedis have been lost as a result of the lack of access route, and we won’t wait until it happens to us”.
He also urged market participants, including shop owners, to refrain from enlarging their storefronts.
Isaac Ofori explained that “If you rent a shop, and it’s blocking access, you should know”
The Ghana National Fire Service’s Assistant Divisional Officer in Kasoa, Patrick Bawa, believes that establishing spaces in the market is one of the safest strategies to battle a fire.
