Over 30 passengers burnt to death after their bus caught fire in Ashanti Region
After a bus travelling from Lawra in the Upper West region caught fire, some 30 passengers are believed to have died while some others are being treated after suffering varying degrees of injuries, according to the Police.
The event occurred, according to sources, when the bus arrived in Akomadan, Ashanti Region, on Tuesday morning, November 2, 2021.
According to a source, the vehicle carrying 37 passengers collided with an abandoned vehicle at an Akomadan Police checkpoint.
The driver failed to use the brakes because he was travelling at a high pace, according to one of the passengers, Kwasi, who managed to flee the vehicle before it caught fire.
“Because he was on top speed, he couldn’t brake immediately and crashed into a stationary vehicle at the barrier resulting in the accident,” he narrated.
He disclosed that the bus caught fire after it had crashed into the vehicle at the Police checkpoint.
“The impact of the crash was great so most of us who were sleeping woke up and started calling for help when the fire started from the front”; adding that only about 10 passengers managed to escape through the glass window.
“When we got to Techiman, about 10 passengers alighted and two more persons joined the bus, so we were close to 36 because the bus takes about 40 passengers”.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses have said their distress calls to the nearby National Fire Service office in the area went unanswered.
