An attack at a gold mine on Thursday in northern Burkina Faso has left two people, a soldier and a civilian dead with four others reportedly injured. The injured are said to be soldiers.

There is no information on who is responsible for the attack yet but many are suspecting it could be led by the Al Qaeda linked Islamist Militants who have been undertaking sporadic attacks in the region in the last decade.

The attack happened in the early hours of Thursday around 0430 GMT at the Karma Industrial Gold Mine owned by Nere Mining. The region has experienced similar attacks targetted at gold mines mostly especially convoys moving to and from the gold mine region.

According to Reuters, “An ambush on buses carrying employees of Canadian firm Semafo in 2019 was the deadliest, killing 39 people”.

The attacks prompted Russia-owned Nordgold to shut down its mines in the region citing security concerns, amove the chamber of mines president said in April has called for the chamber to beef up security measures in the region.
