Speaker of Ghana’s Legislature has predicted that an electoral defeat for the New Patriotic Party in 2024 is looming if they succeed in passing the Electronic transfer levy.

He indicated that the NPP is gradually taking itself out of power with especially this E-levy.

Since this bill was introduced both sides have held opposing stances in Parliament. While the Majority side wants it passed the Minority side does not want it to be passed at all which even resulted in a brawl on Tuesday 21st December 2021.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin had on Thursday, December 23, admonished the NPP to take a second look at the levy.

He cautioned that governing parties always vote themselves out of power because they fail to listen to the masses adding that he won’t be surprised should the NPP lose the 2024 general elections.

Mr. Bagbin exonerated himself from blame for the recent chaos in the Chamber which saw MPs from opposing sides push and shovel one another including the landing of punches.

He explained that, as Speaker, he has worked with the leadership of the house to conduct business and to apply the rules fairly while stating that he is not a Chief Whip of any of the caucuses in the house, and for that matter isn’t duty-bound to bring in members to the chamber.

“Now they say I refused to preside and that is why some numbers were not in the house. I am not a Chief whip of any of the caucuses in the house and I am also not entitled to bring members to the house. That is not my duty.”

“I am to preside and apply the rules and I have applied them fairly according to my understanding through literature and experience and I am not even sure that the members listened to what I read that day about the rules.”
