NLC secures injunction to compel UTAG to call off strike
Court orders striking UTAG members to resume resume work with immediate effect
An interlocutory injunction has been secured by the National Labour Commission to compel the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) to end their strike.
NLC secured the injunction from Labour Court 1 on Friday, August 6, 2021, and per the injunction, all members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana have been ordered to immediately return to work.
Portions of the Justice Frank Aboadwe Rockson granted injunction read, “the respondents herein, whether, by itself, its Executives, officers, members, agents, servants, employers or other persons are restrained from proceeding with its intended strike…,”.
NLC was compelled to invoke the Court’s power to direct the striking Association members to return to post following an indication by the Association that it will continue the strike unless a solution is reached with the government. A meeting with the government earlier in the week ended inconclusively as students are left stranded on the various Universities campuses.
Managements of some of the universities are threatening to close the institutions if the strike exceeds two weeks. Others such as the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana have suspended indefinitely their end-of-semester examinations.
