NLC meets teacher unions to avert possible industrial action
Three teacher unions have been summoned by the National labour Commission who announced their intention to embark on industrial action on Friday, October 1, 2021.
The teacher unions namely the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-Ghana) on August 10, 2021, press briefing made known their decision to embark on industrial action over non-payment of transfer grants, increase in contact hours of teachers and the non-payment of covid funds they were promised.
Just when they were about to put their plans into action tomorrow the NLC called on the leadership of the various unions to commence a negotiation process.
According to the General Secretary of GNAT, they have been invited by the Labour Commission twice with the recent one being on September 23.
He then added that “We are very hopeful,” he stressed.
“We are positive and we are encouraged because the last thing to happen is to begin to throw our hands in despair. So, we are at the table and engaging in good faith. We are ready and engaging in good faith and we believe that all of us will do same.”
As a result of the development, the intended strike has been stalled. The NLC has since then given the teacher unions and education up to mid-November to resolve outstanding issues.
