Nigeria Jail Break, Should Ghana Be Wary Of Infiltration?
There has been recent reports of a jailbreak in one of the South Eastern states in Nigeria causing some hardened criminals to flee the jails.
Considering Ghana’s closeness with Nigeria, what are the security implications on Ghana should some of the bolted criminals infiltrate our borders as a country?
Coordinator of West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Albert Yelyang in explaining the security challenge the situation poses advised that the Ghanaian border authorities should be alert. He empasized that those taking charge of Ghana’s land borders should be vigilant owing to the fact that the people who facilitated the prisoners escape from jail could pose a threat .
Mr Yelyang indicated that this is the time the authorities need to involve communities and opinion leaders along the borders to flash out illegal activities along those places to avoid infiltration of such criminals . He further indicated that considering their modus operandi and how they were able to escape jail shows they are heavily armed.
This situation comes at a time when Ghana and its neighbors on the West Africa Coast are facing terrorist threat in the sub-region.
