MPs role should be redefined to be more developmental – John Kumah
The school of thought in the political landscape where the current role of the modern-day Ghanaian member of parliament ought to be redefined is has ascribed to by the lawmaker of the Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti Region, John Kumah.
Discussing his experience as a member of parliament so far has made the Deputy Finance Minister support the call saying he believes it is time to make the member of parliament role more developmental as compared to the usual lobbying role.
When quizzed on how such a change won’t interfere with the Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executive’s role, he suggested that the MMDCEs should be made development directors.
He also indicated that the laws should be amended to suit the people since they are the ones the lawmakers are accountable to and this will make them[people] see evidence of their[MPs] works.
The lawmaker in an interview on Accra based Citi TV complained that the limiting role of MPs to lobbying sometimes lead to apathy among electorates.
He believes it is high time both sides of the house gave careful thought and reflect on a new role where this time around the members of parliament lead the charge for development in their constituencies.
