Pressure is seriously mounting on the president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sack the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

On the first day of the resumption of Parliament after three month break, members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party held a pressor ahead of the business of the day to call on the president to sack the minister.

The MPs who said they are about 80 in number threatened to avoid any government business directly with Akufo-Addo and any of his ministers should he fail to sack the minister who has come under pressure for the failed economy.

There have been several calls for the Finance Minister to be relieved of his position with the Minority in Parliament even wanting him gone long time ago.

The president just recently said he would not sack the minister because he was there with him during the tough times when Covid threatened to bring the nation down on its knees.

Ken Ofori-Atta is the man leading the government’s team in the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund to secure a bailout for the economy for a record 17th time.

Despite the hope of getting a $3 billion support from the fund, the economy has looked measurable, tattered and hungry with the Cedi now the worse performing currency in the world.

Inflation has crossed the 30 per cent mark with latest figures pegging it at around 37 per cent. That has been felt in the lives of the citizens as prices of goods shoot up daily.

Prices of sachet water was recently increased with a 500ml that used to be sold at 20 pesewas now retailing at 40 pesewas and 50 pesewas at different locations in the capital, Accra.

Transport operators are in discussions with the government with the hope of increasing transport fares by 40 per cent following the continuous increase in prices of petroleum products with petrol currently going for GHS13.15 while diesel goes for GHS15.99 at the pumps.

Ghanaians will wait with abated breath to see the outcome of this pressure from the President’s own party though the Minority in Parliament thinks the House should use a different route to axe the minister by conducting a vote of censure against him due to the president’s recent claim that he won’t dismiss his trusted lieutenant.
