Minority to re-table ‘Joe Wise rejected motion’ when Bagbin resumes work
The Minority caucus in Ghana’s legislature has not given up on overturning the motion approved by First Deputy Speaker Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu known as Joe Wise having accused him of exhibiting political bias on Tuesday, December 7 2021.
This tussle between the two sides started again when the legislator for Tamale South and Minority leader Haruna Iddrissu was seeking to overturn the December 1 ruling of Mr Osei-Owusu who at the time he presided over the proceedings the Minority had staged a walkout leaving a one-sided house in the chamber to admit the 2022 budget statement moved by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
In a reply to the Minority Leader, the Clerk to Parliament, Cyril Nsiah, wrote in a letter addressed to the Minority Leader which said “The Hon. First Deputy Speaker, pursuant to Order 13(2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, has directed that I inform you that your motion is not admitted”.
This did not go down well with the Minority.
“Obviously when Mr Speaker comes, we will take this matter up to possibly submit another motion on it because we believe that [First Deputy Speaker’s] refusal to admit the motion was very biased,” the caucus’s Chief Whip, revealed to the press after a crunch meeting on Monday, December 13.
An angered legislator for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak accused the First Deputy Speaker of choosing to be politically biased than do the work of a Speaker.
He reiterated that the First Deputy Speaker actions have given them no option than to re-strategize and wait for the Speaker of Parliament to safely return from his trip for them to file another motion.
