Liz Truss has announced her resignation as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following a tumultuous week. Her resignation came after a meeting with the famous 1922 Committee Chairman Sir Graham Brady on Thursday. This was after a failed attempt to implement the budget which was aimed at cutting taxes.

A senior backbench Conservative MP, Miriam Cates, an influential member of the 1922 Committee had earlier stated that the Prime Minister’s position was “untenable”. She stated that Prime Minister Truss’ “position does look difficult if not impossible,” ahead of Truss’ meeting with the committee leader.

A statement by the Prime Minister outside Downing Street said, “We set out a vision for a low-tax, high-growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit”.

“I recognize though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to announce that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.”

As the meeting with Sir Brady was ongoing, the number of MPs who publicly expressed no confidence and called for her resignation reached 17 with about 100 MPs reportedly sending in letters to the party leader expressing no confidence in the Prime Minister.
