Calls for a cap to be placed on the number who Judges on the Supreme Court’s bench have been supported by the Ghana Bar Association.

Mr Savior Kudze, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Bar Association stated the need to attach a specific number to such appointments by amending it in the constitution.

He indicated that the possible limit on the number of judges will depend on the work at hand.

“Many more cases are going on appeal now and the Supreme Court happens to be the highest and final appellate court, so for me, going forward, we need to look at it and see if you can have some ceiling.”

“It cannot be left just like that,” he concluded.

Recent complaints from the Minority Caucus in Parliament on the number of judges appointed to the Supreme Court, in particular, sparked this reaction from the association.

An alarm was raised by the Minority Caucus in Parliament over the increment of the number from 11 to 14 judges in the midst of the economic woes Ghana is currently going through.

Four Judges namely Justice Barbara Frances Ackah-Yensu, Justice of the Court of Appeal; Mr Justice George Kingsley Koomson, Justice of the Court of Appeal; Mr Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu Asiedu, Justice of the Court of Appeal; and Mr Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu, Justice of the High Court were vetted on 17th October 2022 by the Appointment Committee following their elevation to the apex court’s bench.
