Let us fine-tune the anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Puis Hadzide
Pius Enam Hadzide, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), has stated that he has no doubt that the anti-gay bill currently before Parliament is intended to protect Ghana’s cultural and family values, but that the bill’s “draconian” aspects should be fine-tuned to remove hate against people who identify as queer in the country.
He said he respected the bill’s proponents’ attempt to sanitize Ghanaian values and the “intentionality of God for man to procreate” in the way nature intended.
Mr Hadzide argued that as politicians work for the bill’s passage into law to protect Ghanaian values and identity, proponents must be receptive to dissenting viewpoints in the country.

As a result, he claims that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and related groups (LGBTQ+) issue is a medical issue rather than a choice or a human rights issue that should be handled within the country’s constitutional framework.
Mr Hadzide stated that the Academics Against Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill’s position should not be ignored outright, but rather should be engaged to hear their point of view on the contentious issue.
Mr Hadzide believes Ghana’s decision to emphasize Africa’s opposition to what he sees as a “disease” inside the sub-region is a good one.
He praised the bill’s proponents for taking a brave stand to protect Ghana’s identity and values, which he believes should be supported, but added that they should feel free to bring out any inconsistencies in the order.
Mr Hadzide who was sharing his thought on TV3’s New day stated that “In its current form I think the bill needs some fine-tuning. Am I against this LGBTQ+? Yes, I am but the bill that has been submitted, should it be passed unamended? I think no. I think that there are some draconian aspects of it that we can fine-tune and for me it is a good call that Ghana is at least taking the lead in the sub-region to amplify the African aversion towards what I consider to be a sickness”.
