Land and sea borders now reopened after two years shutdown
After two years of closure as a measure to curb the spread of Covid-19 which sparked protest from residents within the border communities due to the slow down in economic activities within the areas, Ghana has finally opened its land and sea borders.
President Akufo – Addo revealed this during his much-anticipated speech on Sunday 27th March 2022 as part of measures to ease restrictions
He stated that “As from tomorrow, Monday, 28th March, all land and sea borders will be opened. Fully vaccinated travellers will be allowed entry through the land and sea borders without a negative PCR test result from the country of origin. Citizens and foreign residents in Ghana, who are not fully vaccinated, will have to produce a negative 48-hour PCR test result, and will be offered vaccination on arrival.”
The reason for the easing of restrictions the President noted as a result of the reduced number of active cases in the country.
Ghana’s land, sea and air borders had been closed since coronavirus started two years ago as part of measures to prevent the virus.
The air borders were subsequently reopened amidst tight Covid-19 protocols and testing.
Some border communities in the country held demonstrations to demand the reopening of the land borders, suggesting that the closure is of no use as some persons continue to use the borders illegally.
