Kofi Asare advises GTEC to take legal action against KNUST, others for undermining its authority
Punitive actions have been demanded by education think tank Africa Education Watch against institutions exposed by the Auditor General’s report to be running courses that have not been approved by either the National Accreditation Board or the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
Mr Kofi Asare during an interview on 3FM said legal actions against such institutions would steer up best practices within the system.
He pointed out that what is causing such issues is the existence of institutions such as the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of CapeCoast before the establishment of the National Accreditation Board which is now the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission hence their reluctance to submit their courses for accreditation.
“I want to see a more vibrant GTEC going to court and suing the institutions,” he said.
Mr Asare then revealed that there is a law that requires the academic institution to submit their courses for accreditation.
He lamented that some of the unyielding institutions are not ready to help reform the system though he was happy that the Auditor General apart from finances now is taking interest in programs being run in the various tertiary institutions.
Mr Asare did not mince words in exposing the dangers of unaccredited courses, especially for students who want to continue their education in other countries.
