KNUST students rush to Student Loan office to secure loans
Some students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology who were deferred due to their owing school fees have rushed to the student’s loan office in their numbers to commence the process of applying for a loan.
This was after the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum intervened in the matter which led to an extension of time for the payment of school fees and the subsequent announcement that the students could now take advantage of securing student loans using their Ghana card without any guarantor.
Some KNUST students numbering about six thousand were nearly forced to defer their courses as they were unable to pay their school fees according to the institution’s schedule.
According to the school’s administration, the students are to pay at least 70% of their fees. Those who were unable to pay were to be deferred until external pressure pushed management to rescind its decision.
This made some legislators, like the Amin Amidu Sulemana of Sissala West ask students from his constituency to reach out for assistance.
The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), also came to the rescue of some students who had paid more than 50% of the fees by supporting them with GHS50,000 to top up.
With the payment deadline now extended following the intervention of the Education Minister, and the opportunity for the students to access the government loan for students, it means that the affected students will be able to continue their academic activities without any hindrance in the meantime.
The Students Loan Trust Fund had not disbursed funds for some months now, a situation that affected many university students.
