I will not cancel Free SHS when I become president, Mahama pledges as he calls for policy review
Former president John Mahama has expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the Free Senior High School Program and has called for a review of the policy to make it effective.
The politicization of the education sector that has led to more students getting enrolled in schools without consideration of quality and how to get the best out of the teachers according to ex-President Mahama has contributed to the struggling nature of the policy.
According to the former head of state, this would not have been the case if extensive consultations had been carried out among all stakeholders in the sector before the policy was rolled out.
Making a recommendation for the continuous growth of the policy at the 8th Biennial Delegate Conference of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, Former President Mahama affirmed that he will not cancel the policy if he wins the 2024 elections while calling on the government that its time to invite stakeholders to review the policy.
He also indicated that it is time to keep politics out of critical and sensitive areas such as the education sector in the country.
Former president Mahama reiterated that while expanding access to education, we should also strive for quality indicating that should he be given the nod to lead the country again he would build a strong foundation in education and advocate for equity in dealing with Private and Public school students.
