I cautioned Alpha Conde about a possible coup but he failed to heed – Ghanaian diplomat
Astute Ghanaian diplomat Daniel Kufour Osei has recounted how the coup in Guinea came as no surprise to him.
Ambassador DK Osei who has served as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Guinea during former president Rawlings administration revealed how he cautioned president Alpha Conde about the possibility of a coup.
The former diplomat also revealed how he and President Conde have been friends and were “deeply concerned” about the country’s future.
I raised the issue about the Constitution changes but Mr Condé, now aged 83 rebuffed me. He rather told me I cannot lecture him on democracy and I found it very unlike him [Conde].
The controversial constitutional change in Guinea allowed Mr Condé to successfully run for a third term in 2019. Prior to 2010, he was a long time opposition leader until he was first elected into office. The constitutional change has been indicated as one of the major reasons for the military take-over.
