I am pissed when the war is mentioned as the cause of Ghana’s economic woes – Ivan Kyei Innocent
The recent statement by the Russian Embassy to the Ghanaian media distancing its turmoil with Ukraine from the current economic woes of Ghana has been deemed an “unfortunate and embarrassing spectacle if you observe what government is saying” per the observation of social commentator Ivan Kyei Innocent.
He posited that it is very rare for diplomats to wade into particulars issues in a country in the country they are residing and only come in to do so to set the record straight though this is not the first time such a thing has happened in Ghana.
Also, he cited the instance where the International Monetary Fund gave the Ghanaian government 430 million dollars but the government said it was only given 100 million dollars and that led the IMF to set the record straight by stating the actual amount government was given.
Mr Kyei Innocent further lashed out at the government saying “Any attempt by the government to blame Ghana’s economic woes on the Russia –Ukraine war is nauseating and embarrassing.”
He also revealed how a report from the IMF pointed out that Ghana is in this mess because of its reckless financial decision.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori –Atta was also heavily criticized by the social commentator stating that “the only thing Ken Ofori Atta is good at is borrowing since he became the Finance Minister”.
Also bemoaning how this incessant borrowing led the country to run into debt due to such reckless and irresponsible way the economy is being run.
He added, “I am pissed when the war is mentioned as the cause of our economic woes” while questioning “What direct trade do we have with them?” He noted that this shows the government is irresponsible and wondered if it was only Ghana that is being affected by the situation.
“Even countries directly trading with them are not complaining how much more us in a faraway place this is very nauseating,” he said.
According to him, the signs of what Ghana’s economy would land were seen when it started but could not fathom why now and then the government is always playing the blame game.
According to Mr Kyei “they have responded because the situation has gotten out of hand and government must sit up and take responsibility”.
On other factors that led to Ghana’s economic woes, the vociferous commentator recounted how the government’s policy collapsed struggling banks where there were other ways to resolve the situation and deemed it as a reckless decision on the part of the government citing that “financial sector suffers challenges but the measures you employ makes you a leader” on the other hand some state-owned enterprises are recording loses and you have leaders who justify them.
For him, Ghana’s economic situation ought not to be blamed on anyone but ourselves and the Akufo-Addo-led administration.
And what he thinks makes the situation dire for the country is the fact that there seems not to be any properly structured economic recovery program which led the government to bang all its hope on the Electronic Transaction Levy which is not guaranteed.
He furthered that “lectures are not solutions to the economic challenges” and called for the government to sit down and plan to resolve the situation while also criticizing President Akufo-Addo over the fact that his focus seems to be on political power and not how to recover Ghana from this situation.
In conclusion, he made a clarion call to citizens to demand accountability from the government to take Ghana out of this shameful situation
