Guinea must hold an election within six months -ECOWAS
Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Akufo-Addo has advised member states that, they as a regional body need to be very tactful in the decision they take since it will turn out to have a long term effect in defending and upholding democratic values in the sub-region.
He said this on the sidelines of discussions to find a solution to the latest overthrow of the constitution of one of its members, Guinea. The President addressed representatives from 13-member states during the extraordinary session held in Accra on Thursday, September 16, 2021.
Meanwhile, the ECOWAS chairman was confident that his fellow presidents will proffer durable solutions to the crisis and rise to the occasion as in the past. At the moment, the regional body has unanimously decided that, for Guinea to return to democratic rule they will have to conduct elections within six months. The Guinean military leader per some reports also has set some conditions to get their country to democratic rule.
Addressing the media, the president of the ECOWAS Commission Jean-Claude Brou revealed that ECOWAS as a regional bloc is committed to supporting Guinea return to democratic rule. ECOWAS as a regional body has had its fair share of criticism following the seizure of power from President Alpha Conde of Guinea by military men on Sunday, September 5, 2021, following gunfire in the capital Conakry.
