Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the head of the Public Affairs Unit at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has said more divorce figures were recorded in 2021 as compared to 2020.

He noted that “In 2020, because of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Assembly did not record any significant numbers, but all one can say is that the numbers increased in 2021 as compared to that of 2020″.

Mr. Nii Ankrah who made these remarks as reported by the Ghana News Agency mentioned that the Assembly, in 2021, registered a total of 345 customary marriages, 79 of, which were dissolved, indicating that, one out of four of the marriages registered collapsed.

They include engagements and Islamic marriages.

Notable among the common causes of the collapse of marriages include infidelity, ill-treatment, and child non-maintenance.

According to the PRO, ordinance marriages are governed by the court and were legally binding as such the Assembly did not have the authority to intervene in the dissolution of those unions.

“The divorce processes of those marriages are strictly restricted to the court.” To avoid disappointments, he asked the people to follow the proper processes when registering any type of marriage with the Assembly.

Though other Assemblies may register weddings, he claimed that the AMA had “a unique brand” and that marriages registered and done with the Assembly “had some type of authority.”

He said, “With ordinance marriage after the marriage is registered with the Assembly, the information is published for a period of 21 days to allow for any objects or otherwise after, which the marriage can either be conducted by the Assembly or any church certified to do so.’
