GPRTU moots another transport fare increment
Another adjustment in transport prices is in the offing according to the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union, following the increase in fuel prices.
The union laments that the fuel price increment has taken a toll on the finances of its members, the commercial vehicle owners.
Currently, petrol per litre has now exceeded the GH¢11 mark at the pumps while diesel is also now over GH¢14 per litre.
This according to GPRTU head of communications Mr Abbas Imoro, this has necessitated its demand for transport fares to be increased.
He justified the union’s position saying “We have sensitized the general public that whenever the prices of fuel go up 10 per cent above the existing price, automatically we are supposed to increase fares. There are so many things to look out for including the current economic situation. So for where we are heading towards, we cannot keep sacrificing – definitely when our leadership meets something positive must come out.”
In May, transport fares were upwardly adjusted by 20 per cent.
When the new fares were implemented in full force as of May 9, 2022, the price of petrol and diesel were being sold at a national average of GH¢9.41 and GH¢11.12.
