Government targets installing 10,000 CCTV cameras in phase 2 of Alpha project
Plans are far advanced in phase two of the ongoing Integrated National Security Communications Enhancement Project (Alpha project) where the government seeks to procure 10,000 more CCTV cameras to be installed across the length and breadth of Ghana.
This project is for the enhancement of the operations of the various security and intelligence agencies in the country.
Regional capitals such as Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and border areas like Aflao, Alubo and Paga had received their share of the project during its first phase which commenced in 2012 with about 800 CCTV cameras installed.
According to the National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah’s assessment of the first phase of the project, it was successful as it aided most agencies in terms of communication, crime detection and detection of persons flouting road traffic rules among others.
The Minister however revealed in Parliament that the second phase of the project is targeting the installation of 10,000 more cameras and also extending cellular networks to every district in the country. This was revealed in response to a question filed on the floor of Parliament by the Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu seeking to know the progress of the project so far.
With regards to Police stations, the Minister revealed that 432 out of 900 Police stations across the country will benefit from the project while others are on the waiting list for the next phase.
