Ghana Police deploy trained dogs in Accra in efforts to increase visibility
In the country’s capital, Accra, the Ghana Police Service has begun a dog patrol program.
Personnel with highly-trained security dogs on leashes have been strategically positioned for operational patrols as part of the project, which is run by the Service’s K-9 Unit.
This novel operation is “aimed at raising the visibility of personnel, strengthening intelligence collection, tracking of illicit products, and improving upon other parts of criminal investigations,” according to the Police on Monday, October 18.
It comes just two months after the horse patrol was established and a few weeks after Acting Inspector General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare was appointed the substantive IGP.
According to the Police, plans are underway to expand the dog patrols to other regional capitals.
“We shall continue to pursue multiple Security and Visibility Modules to increase our interactions with the public and aggressively fight crime in our communities.
“We are here because of you and we rely on your help and support to succeed,” a post on the Police Facebook page read.
