Ghana joins the world to celebrate teachers on World Teachers Day
As the world cannot overlook the efforts of teachers, Ghana joins the international community to celebrate its gallant teachers as World Teachers Day is marked today Tuesday, October 5, 2021.
The day is mainly focused on how the world needs to appreciate the efforts of the educators of the world by improving the conditions of service of the educators and also improving standards in the education sector.
This day to commemorate and appreciate the efforts of teachers was established in 1994 to also mark the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 International Labour Organization/UNESCO recommendation concerning the status of teachers which is a standard-setting instrument that addresses the status and situation of teachers across the world.
The status deals with the benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards of the initial preparation, further education, recruitment and teaching and learning conditions.
This year’s World Teachers Day celebration will focus on the support teachers need to contribute their quota to the recovery process from Covid-19 hence the theme “Teachers at the heart of education recovery’’.
UNESCO and Education International are scheduled to organize some events to highlight the effects the pandemic has had on the teaching profession and steps taken to aid teachers to reach their full potential.
In Ghana, the day is set to be commemorated with a grand durbar in Sunyani in the Bono Region according to the Public Relation Officer of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr Peter Korda.
