The fight against illegal mining is on, and the destruction of equipment used in the business continues. The latest of such actions saw some equipment on the Ankobra river being used for illegal mining got destroyed by the Nzema East Municipal Security Council.
Kwabena Okyere Darko the Western Regional Minister gave clear instructions for the operation to be carried out.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Nzema East, Frank Okpeyen led the joint operation of National Security operatives from the Western Region, the Western Regional Police operations, and the National anti-illegal mining taskforce on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, to flush out illegal miners on the Ampansie to Dominase section of the Ankobra River.
A massive operation to root out the ills of illegal mining in the country at the start of the year saw many once polluted rivers such as the Ankrobra river regaining their good state but following a recent lax on the fight, the illegal miners seem to have upped their game in the rivers. That was seen in recent observations where the rivers such as Ankobra was seen taking their polluted shape once again, casting doubts into the efforts made earlier in the year.
In a bid to free the river from all illegal mining activities, the Nzema East MUNSEC embarked on the operation which has caused all the illegal miners to flee the site at the arrival of the operation team.
Changfang machine platforms numbering over 20 were destroyed during the exercise with the assembly promising regular patrols as a measure to stop the persons involved in the illegal activity from returning to the site.
