Galamsey: ‘If things continue this way we would have to import water to Ghana’ – GWCL
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has said that due to the menace of illegal mining, it currently uses ten times the chemicals needed for refining water before distributing.
Speaking on the Sunrise show on 3FM today 15th September, the Public Relations Officer of the GWCL Mr Stanley Martey said the company have no option but to shut down its machines if the ‘Galamsey’ situation finally becomes unbearable.
He explained that the condition that the country is likely to face if illegal mining persists is that Ghana will have to import water. “It’s a serious issue and we need to do something about it. If things continue this way we would have to import water to Ghana,” he said.
Mr Martey said “We are using ten times more of the chemicals required to refine the water before we pump them for distribution. When it becomes too much to bear we will shut down our machines.”
Meanwhile, the government has set up a task force to deal with the activities of illegal mining in the country.
President Nana Akufo-Addo In his view, efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities have seen a massive improvement under his watch as President.
“The efforts have brought a lot of fruits first of all. Galamsey is now a subject of national discussion. Everywhere you go, there’s this matter of galamsey. We’ve at least achieved this purpose of heightening consciousness about it as an evil,” he said in a radio interview in Ho on 13th September.
