#FixTheCountry demo to hit Takoradi on Nkrumah’s birthday
Takoradi to host next #FixTheCountry demo on September 21
Following a successful demonstration in the national capital, Accra, organizers of #FixTheCountry have lived up to their words when they assured that each region will have its own version of the protest.
Western Region will be the next place where the group will hold its protest and have slated September 21, 2021, as the day for the match in Takoradi. They accordingly have had permission from the Regional Police Command to engage in the exercise.
This will however hopefully be a less stressful one following the Accra version which had to be postponed due to a legal battle between the group and the Police. But after securing the blessings of the acting IGP to hold the Accra version, the subsequent ones including Takoradi’s own maybe without the same struggles.
Conveners of the #FixTheCountry movement have sought permission from the Western Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service to once again hit the streets of Takoradi on Tuesday, September 21.
“As you know, yesterday’s demonstration was planned as the first of many events, and it’s supposed to kickstart a process of regional FixTheCountry demonstrations,” they said in a statement after the first street protest in Accra.
Started as social media trend, the group has taken a real shape and has persisted in its demands for better living conditions for the people of Ghana. They blamed the disparity in the system that favours just the fortunate few and leaving the masses to struggle daily for little.
The constitution of the republic has been the major hitting point for the group with numerous calls for it to be amended to meet modern standards and in a way that will promote equality and fairness in Ghanaian society. A campaign has been launched online targeting one million signatures of Ghanaians to pass a ‘vote of no confidence’ on the supreme document of the land.
“We are rejecting the fraudulent Fourth Republic [Constitution] that impoverishes its citizens, disables accountability from the political class and creates an imperial presidency,” the organisers said in the post-demonstration statement on Thursday, August 5.
