Fight Against Galamsey : Military Deploys 400 Extra Soldiers To Beef Up Operations
The Ghana Armed Forces has added an extra 400 military officers to the initial deployment it made to strengthen its fight against illegal mining on river bodies.
In a statement signed by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, this constitutes the second phase of Operation Halt, and is aimed at removing all persons and logistics involved in mining on water bodies.
The new phase of the Operation will also focus on the tributaries of the Pra River which have also been significantly affected by the activities of illegal miners.
The Ghana Armed Forces revealed that it has also started armed patrols along the Pra River, the statement added.
It will be recalled that Late in April, 200 soldiers were deployed to flush out illegal miners at the River Pra and its surrounding areas as part of the renewed national fight against galamsey.
