Statement from the FDA advising the public against the use of injectable glutathione
The Food and Drugs Authority has warned the public against the use of injectable glutathione used for skin bleaching.
In a press release issued by the authority on October 4, the general public was cautioned that no injectable glutathione or injectable skin correction agent has been approved for use.
As their mandate to clinically examine and issue guidelines for the correct dosing and duration for treatment of drugs, the FDA has said that “there is so far no clinical evidence for the safety and effectiveness of these products and no published guidelines for correct dosing and duration of treatment.”
The authority went on to caution the public that users of the injectable glutathione stand a greater risk considering the fact that its side effects include, “toxic effects on the liver, kidneys and nervous system and a series of skin reaction know as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome” adding that the long-term use of it may expose the user to skin cancer.
According to the authority clothed with the power to test and certify food and drugs in Ghana, the product may not be properly manufactured since it has not gone through all the necessary checks and guidelines for manufacturing standard drugs whiles its administration by persons who are not certified to do so may lead to the transmission of diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis C and B”
The FDA has therefore advised persons who would want to deal with any skin condition to seek the help of certified professionals and avoid buying injectable medicinal products.
