Sam George, the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has questioned the government’s motivation for imposing an electronic transaction charge, which will take effect on February 1, 2022.

Mobile money and other electronic transactions worth more than GHC100 per day will be subject to the proposed 1.75 per cent tax.

The Finance Minister while presenting the 2022 budget in Parliament on Wednesday, November,17,2021  said “Electronic transactions covering mobile money payments, bank transfers, merchant payments, and inward remittances will be charged at an applicable rate of 1.75%, which shall be borne by the sender except for inward remittances, which will be borne by the recipient”

Road tolls collected at numerous booths across the country are likely to be replaced by the charge.

However, Sam George, a member of the Communication Committee of the NDC wonders why a government that has boasted about its accomplishments in digitalization and financial inclusion would impose such a tax.

He tweeted.“The @NAkufoAddo government has clearly lost the plot. How do you introduce a tax on electronic transactions and turn around to claim you are driving digital inclusion? Extremely desperate and clueless governance on display”.
